Switching to smart meters

Have you heard about the big RTS switch off? It’s been in the news a lot lately, so we wanted to share this update with you so that you don’t lose your energy supply.

What’s happening?

From 30 June 2025 the technology that supports Radio Teleswitch electricity meters (RTS) will switch off due to it being obsolete. So, RTS meters will no longer be able to swap between peak and off-peak rates and may stop working entirely, which could affect your heating and hot water supply.

If you have an RTS meter, your electricity supplier should get in touch to arrange an upgrade to a more efficient smart meter before the deadline. You may want to reach out to them if they haven’t, it’s their duty to make sure you have a suitable meter installed and your service isn’t disrupted. If you don’t have an RTS meter, then you don’t have to do anything as this change won’t affect you.

How do I know if I have an RTS meter?

According to EnergyUK, you may have an RTS meter if:

  • there’s a separate switch board near the meter in your home with a Radio Teleswitch label on it

  • your home is heated using electricity or storage heaters

  • there’s no gas supply to your home

  • you get cheaper energy at different times of day, for example, you might be on an Economy 7, Economy 10, or Total Heat Total Control tariff

Reach out to your electricity supplier if you’re unsure which meter you have in your home. If you have an RTS meter, you’ll need to have the upgrade done before 30 June 2025 to avoid any issues with your heating or hot water.
