You may have seen recent news stories about e-scooters and e-bikes involving issues with their batteries that have caused fires in homes. While we don’t want to stop you or your family from having fun, we thought we’d share some tips on best practice when it comes to safety with electric vehicles.

  • Avoid charging e-scooters/bikes at night when you are asleep. If there are any issues, you will be more alert to them when you are awake.
  • When buying an e-bike, e-scooter, or replacement charger and batteries, only choose a branded, genuine product from a reputable retailer you can trust. There are lots of fakes out there, and it can be difficult to spot the difference.
  • Don’t charge or store any electric vehicles in the communal areas if you live in a block.
  • Check that your smoke detector isn’t damaged and if you can test it yourself, test it regularly. If you don’t think your smoke detector is working, get in touch with us.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to share some extra safety about other appliances in your home. Here’s some simple safety advice when using tumble dryers, washing machines or dishwashers:

Don't leave the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher running overnight or while you are out. They are a fire risk because of their high wattage, friction, and motors.

  • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Don't use washing machines and tumble dryers at night or while unattended.
  • Take your clothes out of the dryer as soon as you can after the cycle and shaken loose to help with cooling.
  • Don't overload plug sockets. Make sure that no more than 13 amps are in any one plug socket.
  • Remove the lint from the trap after every load of clothes dried. Don’t cover the vent or any other opening.
  • Only vent the warm air to the outside of a building. Don’t put rags or materials into your tumble dryer if they have been used to soak up flammable liquids.
